Clipstream Video Security
Piracy Protection Package (PPP)

The prevention of video content piracy and video stream theft was not overlooked in the design of Clipstream Video. Content owners can be comfortable that their videos are not only streaming at the highest player-less quality but that their content is safe from piracy. Clipstream Video's security features:

  • the prevention of local playback
  • the inability for stolen content to be streamed from other servers
  • protection of bandwidth theft by remote referencing restriction
  • difficult content theft and downloaded files are unplayable anyway

Clipstream™ Video's Secure ID

During the encoding process, Clipstream Video offers the option to lock the encoded stream to a Security ID (SID). The SID is created from a URL or IP address, a range of IP addresses, or list of URLs. Once locked to the SID, each *.vcs file will only play if the html page presenting the content is on the server specified in the SID. The applet code also requires a secure key to unlock the file. The SID is is a string of characters that is embedded into the video and is not visible to anyone except the content owner. The secure key is a string of characters that is found in the applet code.

This effectively prevents piracy of Clipstream Video streams in this fashion:

  • Even if a content thief manages to download the clip, it will not be playable locally
  • A secure Clipstream file will not be servable from another web server, even with a valid Clipstream Video code key.
  • Remote referencing of a playable secure Clipstream video will display only a title image with a message that the file is not authorized to be played.

To utilize these security features, a Secure ID is obtained from your Clipstream representative. The SID is associated with your IP address or URL. From this SID, your secure code key is also created. When your content is encoded, the SID is entered into the Clipstream Video Encoder and then the content is locked to your server. During playback, the following happens:

1. The URL is compared to the Secure Code Key. If the server serving the clip does not match the Code Key, the file will not stream.

2. The SID and the secure key are compared. If the Secure ID encoded in the content does not meet the requirements of the secure key, the file will not stream.

Authorizing Domains / Syndicating Content

On the Internet, theft of content is not the only concern. It is possible to copy another site's content by copying part of the source of a web page and pasting it into another web page on another server, therefore referencing the server that is hosting the files. In essence, the perpetrator is not only be stealing content but is stealing the source server's bandwidth. This could be very costly and difficult to track down. As discussed above and demonstrated in the PPP demo, Clipstream Video's Piracy Protection Package defeats this type of theft. Better yet, Clipstream offers the ability for the content owner to unlock the content for selected domains:

By using Clipstream's PPP in conjunction with the Authorized Domain parameter, the content owner can 'Syndicate' their content to partner sites, paying customers, etc.! The syndication of the content is controlled by a simple text file on the content owner's server and can even be time-based. (YYMMDD) Find out more!
